Travel Safe on a Volunteer Team
In a recent survey of Volunteer Card members, we found that 63% of those polled traveled as part of a team on their most recent volunteer trip. In the light of this information, we think it is important to consider what safety on a volunteer team could look like.
Volunteering might be a new endeavor for you, but even if it is not, it is likely that you will be faced with new experiences and possibly new challenges. Protecting yourself and those you are volunteering with should be a top priority.
5 tips for staying safe while traveling with a volunteer team
1. Communicate
Clear communication, when working on a team, is vital. From clearly communicating meeting locations and start times, to having clear communication when working on a project; the more you talk to one another the less chance there is of a travel or medically related mishap.
2. Observe your surroundings
You may be rushing to get somewhere on time or to finish a project before the end of the day, but taking a few extra minutes to stop and observe your surroundings could save you some major hassle.
3. Observe what is happening on your team>
Different members of your team will react to situations differently. Pay attention to how those around you are feeling and doing when working on a volunteer project. Keep an eye out for your fellow volunteers and be willing to lend a hand, when necessary, to help keep them and yourself safe.
4. Ask questions
How many times have you asked a question only to find out there were several others wondering the same thing? If something isn’t clear to you do not hesitate to ask for further detail. This could save you and your team from confusion.
5. Make a plan
If your volunteer organization has not done this for you already, work as a team to make a response plan. Consider what steps you will take if someone in your group gets separated from the rest, or if someone gets injured.
